Living the change

Practicing what we preach

The social aspect of sustainability is crucial if we want to be a reliable sustainability leader. We have set bold goals through our strategy that aim to drive change in the industry. Therefore, it is important that we also live the change.

This means, for example, being a good employer that promotes equality, inclusion and diversity. We want to be a company that actively participates in society and shares our values and expertise in discussions with various stakeholders. And we must make sure that we build up our sustainability competence.

People & Culture

Establishing a winning company culture

In sync with our strategy, we strive to become a purpose- and value-driven company. Developing our employees and leaders is crucial in establishing a sound culture that enables us to reach our goals. We are already an award-winning employer but want to improve even more.

Equality, diversity, and inclusion, as well as internal and external collaborations, form a solid foundation for our company culture. To meet our sustainability targets, we need to be a learning organization that boosts our employees’ confidence in sharing our opinions and standing up for our values.

SDGs connected to the initiative

The people in our company and our value chain play a decisive role in reaching our sustainability and circularity goals. It focuses on safe, decent employment and working conditions, diversity, equality, and inclusion internally and in our value chain.

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Safe and decent employment conditions and fair working conditions are essential and contribute to sustainable economic growth and recovery. Inclusion and diversity are self-evident.

SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Sustainable development requires collaboration and openness to new perspectives. We must build trust between partners to create long-term relationships based on shared visions and goals.

A member of the UN Global Compact

In the autumn of 2021, Duni Group was accepted as a UN Global Compact (UNGC) member, the world’s largest initiative to bring together the business community around corporate responsibility. In 2022, we were accepted as an “early adopter” of UNGC’s digital reporting platform alongside a select group of leading companies.

Members pledge to change their operations based on four areas that should be part of the companies’ strategy, culture, and daily operations: human rights, labor law, the environment and anti-corruption.

As a UNGC member, we commit to sustainable change, which is at the heart of our strategy. It's not new to us, but making it official feels good. Subsequently, we have updated our Code of Conduct, placing greater demands on our suppliers and own units.

Initiatives that improve the workplace

Several internal initiatives and collaborations build on and strengthen Duni Group’s focus on social responsibility.

Karin Roslin, Organizational Development Manager, says, “For example, we continue cooperating with Mitt Liv (My Life), which works for diversity and inclusion in the Swedish labor market. Internally, we set up a Diversity & Inclusion Board during autumn 2021, aiming to spotlight this critical area and help us better understand the various success factors. A smaller but important initiative is the ‘buddy programs’ rolled out across the organization to support onboarding new colleagues.”

Building sustainability competence

Competence, communication, and confidence are essential to meet our sustainability and circularity targets. We need to broaden and deepen our knowledge of sustainability throughout the group. Everyone will, to some degree, be required to commit and drive improvements and be ready to stand up for our values in discussions with customers, partners, and other stakeholders.

To help realize this, we have promoted 18 Sustainability Leaders around the organization, who will give local support and train colleagues in crucial areas. As support, a 5-level sustainability e-learning path for all employees was launched in 2023.

Leading the way in double materiality

One new step in the work to meet our strategy’s sustainability goals in 2022 was implementing a double materiality assessment. We compiled this based on initial document analysis and qualitative interviews with more than 30 stakeholders. The content in the matrix we created relates to our impact and the most significant future risks and opportunities. Double materiality will be required in the coming EU CSRD legislation, and having done a first version already in 2022 puts us in a good position for the future.

Extending our sustainability communication

Working towards our bold sustainability and circularity targets, we must also communicate our progress. We must become more transparent about our achievements and challenges to secure a relevant dialogue with key stakeholders. For this reason, we are going wider and deeper in our communication activities. Our facts should be in place, and we must remain humble. At the same time, we must be confident when we are on the right track.

KPIs for the initiative

Apart from measuring our performance on the environmentally focused sustainability initiatives in Duni Group’s updated strategy, we have set relevant key performance indicators (KPIs) for the social aspects included in Living the Change. They are:

  • EcoVadis score
  • The target for 2025: Platinum level
  • Sustainability competence
  • The target for 2025: All Duni Group employees trained

Unlike a linear economy, a circular economy takes a holistic approach to sustainability. To be truly sustainable, a product’s life cycle must be considered in a circular model.
